01 — Café Workflow

In-house canning, four steps.

How Australian cafés use Saturn PET cans for iced coffee and cold brew take-home.

The setup-once, fill-on-demand model. Cafés keep PET cans + lids stocked on shelf. Customer orders take-home. Barista fills, lid attaches, seamer seals. Time per can: under 30 seconds with the bench-top Saturn seamer.

01
Brew & chill
Cold brew, iced latte, matcha — pre-prepared at café temp 0–4°C.
02
Pour & lid
Fill 400ml can to ~5mm headspace. Attach matching 55mm aluminium lid.
03
Seam
Place under bench-top seamer. Single-cycle 8–12 second seal.
04
Label & sell
Sticker label, hand to customer. Refrigerate at retail if held.

Equipment needed: bench-top can seamer (one-time investment ~$1,400 + GST). View Saturn Table-Top Seamer →

02 — Best Size Per Drink

400ml is the café standard. 500ml is the premium upsell.

Two formats handle 95% of café take-home iced coffee SKUs.

400ml clear PET (55 × 133mm) — standard take-home. Holds iced latte, oat flat white, batch cold brew, iced matcha. Reads as a one-serve format on Instagram and survives daily fridge cycles. Cartons of 200/CTN — about 2 days’ turnover for a busy specialty café running 100 take-home cans/day.

500ml clear PET (55 × 168mm) — large format. Premium price point for batch cold brew take-home or share-pack cold brew. Same 55mm seamer setup — no machine change.

Both sizes pair with the same standard 55mm aluminium lid. One can-seamer, one lid SKU, two finished products. See full size matrix →

03 — Café Operator FAQ

What baristas ask before stocking PET.

How long does iced coffee last in a sealed PET can?

Sealed iced coffee in PET typically holds 3–7 days refrigerated for dairy-based drinks, and 7–14 days for black coffee (cold brew). Always treat as fresh perishable — not shelf-stable.

Do I need a food handling certificate to can in-house?

Yes — canning beverages for sale is food preparation under Australian food safety laws. You’ll need: (1) Food Safety Supervisor certification for your business, (2) appropriate council food premises licence, and (3) labelling that meets FSANZ standards. Check with your local council; most cafés already hold these for in-store food prep.

Can I do oat milk lattes in PET?

Yes — PET is inert to dairy and plant-based milk. Oat milk and barista-blend alternatives perform well in sealed PET cans at refrigerated temperatures. Recommend chilling milk to <4°C before canning to slow separation.

What about WA cafés — can I sell in-house canned iced coffee?

From 1 March 2024, WA’s Plan for Plastics bans PET cans with attached lids/seals filled in-store after a customer orders. Pre-prepared (e.g. batch cold brew filled before customer arrives) may be treated differently. Verify your specific format with DWER WA (plastic-exemptions@dwer.wa.gov.au · 6364 7000) before launching a WA in-store canning program.

Can I run multiple SKUs through one seamer?

Yes — Saturn seamer handles all 6 PET can sizes (200–700ml) with the same 55mm lid setup. Switch SKUs with a quick height adjustment (10 seconds). One bench-top seamer supports your entire iced range.
